Appropriate - Scenic Design
The white-washed history of this family dealing with the overwhelming racism of their late patriarch was ripe with metaphor. The set is grown over, dirty, and cluttered, but with the ever-present looming image of their father a constant and unrelenting character in the play. We literally white-washed the set, giving a stark contrast to the real lives of the characters on stage, grappling with a past they dispise and refuse to acknowledge. I was so pleased to be a visiting artist at Doane College for this production.
