Smoke, Lilies & Jade - Costume Design
Based on the semi-autobiographic epic poem by Richard Bruce Nugent, Smoke is a fantasy play about the most fabulous night of Alex and his friends' lives. The self-proclaimed "Niggerati" included real-life greats of the Harlem Rennaisance — Zora Neale Hurston, Wallace Thurman, and Langston Hughes — deals with sexuality, mysogyny, and, of course, racism in the early 20th Century. Imagining the most fabulous versions of each of the characters was truly the fun of this show, as was creating moments of pure magic on stage. The scenic design included a highly reflective floor and a highly pigmented teal wall that the costumes had to move around and in without competing. The color palette of pinks, lavenders, golds, silvers, deep reds, and a vivid, bright blue helped to create the ethereal nature of the world.
