Hoppla, We're Alive! - Costume Design
A Weinmar play burned by the Nazis and maybe not produced since the 1920s, Hoppla explores the definition of "revolutionary". Though the characters begin the play in prison, all are released over time except Karl, who is committed and eventually released 15 years later, only to find his comrades have become liberals and union organizers and subversives and politicians. None seems to remember the revolution as he's held onto it all these years. The production staged the show in a construction site, the costumes reflecting the setting by framing the characters in terms of their relation to the setting — do they belong in a construction site? Are they protected or exposed? Do they seem like interlopers in the space?
